Vegan Tacos in a Meat Eater's Paradise
/Holy moly my first official blog post! Those who know me know that this blog has been a long time comin' and finally I've taken my writing skills to my very own personal blog.
For my opening post I chose to write about my recent experience at a fun new food place in Cancun. On Saturday night my Mexican family (the in-laws) and I ventured out to Corazón Contento in downtown Cancun. This is not just your average vegan taco place!
Corazón Contento is special because their proceeds go directly to Tierra de Animales, a very well-known animal shelter here in Cancun. The idea of the vegan taco place was to bring in a steady income to help support the medical, housing, and food services that are constantly needed by the animal shelter.
Tierra de Animales plays a crucial role in saving the lives of hundreds of street dogs in Cancun every day. Here in Mexico, homeless dogs are commonly seen in the streets and often live short and tragic lives without much food or care. Tierra de Animales has given these dogs a second chance by rescuing, rehabilitating, sterilizing, and finding forever homes for these loving animals.
I was super excited when I learned there would be a vegan taco place opening in Cancun because vegetarian and vegan places are very scarce here. When I first moved here 4 years ago, there were NO vegetarian places and being vegetarian was basically unheard of. I used to be one when I first got to Cancun and most locals looked at me like I had four heads when I told them I didn't eat meat. Although now I only consider myself a "fair weather vegetarian", I'm glad to see times have changed and Corazón Contento is one of a few vegan options available.
To eat here you don't even need to be vegan, that's how delicious the tacos are. Choose from the list of Mexican style tacos and a side of guacamole or beans if you so desire. Everything made at this place is free of animal products, but still has authentic Mexican style and taste.
I had a bistec taco, a pastor taco, and a chorizo con papa taco, all were finger licking good!!

I think this perfectly sums up the restaurant's goals and ideals. Thank you Corazón Contento for giving Cancun another veggie option and one that supports such a great cause!
