10 Things You Should Never Say To Sober People

10 Things You Should Never Say To Sober People

Some of my latest posts have been pretty emotional and serious so I wanted to publish one that pokes some fun at sobriety.  Sober people can make drinkers feel uncomfortable and sometimes they chime in with the most unusual comments.  The following is a list I comprised of things you should really never say to sober people.  Some have actually been said to me, others I just came up with.  Drinkers..consider these next time you're around a Sober Sally.

How I Got Sober

How I Got Sober

I've been receiving many messages and emails asking what I did to get sober.  Many people have asked me if I've gone to AA or if I followed a certain step program or went to treatment.  My answer might shock some.  I have done none of the above. My answer is I have no sobriety secret or fool proof way to get and stay sober.  I only know what worked and didn't work for me.  I was not physically dependent on alcohol, therefore detox was not necessary for me.  Although even if I was, in my circumstances I think I was determined and willing to deal with sobriety on my own. (This is not recommended for those who need detox.  Do not endanger your health!)

Reflections on my 29th Birthday

Reflections on my 29th Birthday

Today I am 29. OMG, oldness setting in! I'm one year away from 30, AH!  Today I am also one year and one month sober. It's been one month since I published my article One Year Without Alcohol, which promptly went viral on the internet.  Let me just say how crazy that is! I wanted to take a minute to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who read my article and took the time to write me a comment, a message on Facebook, a tweet, or an email.  I have been so pleasantly overwhelmed by the outpouring of positive feedback I have received after sharing my story with the world.  It was not easy to put into words how difficult and wonderful the last year has been, but I am so glad I did and happy that so many people felt inspired by what I had to say.

My Goodbye Letter to Cancun

My Goodbye Letter to Cancun

After 5 years, the time has finally come for us to part ways.  What a roller coaster ride it has been.  When I found you, I was blown away by your flashing lights, party scene, interesting people, and beautiful beaches.  You were my escape.  You were the answer to all my problems, or so I thought.I always describe us as having a love-hate relationship, although I could never hate you.  I think most people that come from other places to live here can agree with me when I say most of them move to Cancun to escape something – probably themselves, me included.

Big Life Changes: We're Moving!

Big Life Changes: We're Moving!

Yes you read that correctly, surprise! We're moving!  By now most of my friends and family are in the loop about the move, as well as my job that I gave my two week notice to last Friday. Fernando and I decided that the time has come for us to make the BIG change -move from Mexico to the United States.  Our plan has always been to eventually move to the US as this is where we would like to live and raise our family in the long run.  We weren't sure when exactly we would feel like moving, but we began planning it recently because Fer and his co-workers who were involved in the same program at his work were let go. Another reason we thought now would be a good time is because my sister is getting married in November and I want to be nearby so I can perform all my maid of honor duties, and be there for her during this important time.

Mexico City / Chilangolandia Part 2

Mexico City / Chilangolandia Part 2

The last two days of our trip in Mexico City were dedicated to the pyramids of Teotihuacan, celebrating two special anniversaries, and trying to fit in anything else we forgot. Sunday we left early in the morning and took the metro to a large bus station that has buses that go to and from Teotihuacan all day.  Coming from Cancun where it is completely flat, seeing mountains and pyramids in Mexico City was just amazing.

Mexico City / Chilangolandia Part 1

Mexico City / Chilangolandia Part 1

Fer and I were lucky enough to be able to take a long weekend recently and visit the big and beautiful Mexico City. People from Mexico City are known as Chilangos, hence Chilangolandia.  We covered as much as we could in 4 days.  My thoughts on Mexico city are that it is clean, large, and very different from Cancun!  There is also a noticeable gap between rich people and poor people.  We were approached frequently for money by beggars.  It has a plethora of culture and history which I loved, and the climate was perfect. No humidity in Mexico City! On our first day we arrived in the morning so that we could have the whole day to see stuff.  We dropped our suitcases at our hotel, Hotel Imperial Reforma, a beautiful place right in the heart of the city.

A Year Without Alcohol

A Year Without Alcohol

Wow I can't even believe I'm typing this! If you're reading this it's because I made it.  I made it to one full year without alcohol.  On May 6, 2013 I took my last drink.  I will never forget how it felt.  I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.  I was tired of being the party girl, I was tired of feeling like shit, I was tired of disappointing and embarrassing my friends and loved ones.  I decided I needed a big change. Trying to drink in moderation hadn't proved to be the best option for me.  It never worked.  Enough was enough.  I tried something that I never did before - stopped drinking alcohol completely. When I started this sober journey I wasn't sure how long it would last and now I can't imagine going back to how my life was before.  The positives have been plentiful and the negatives have been slim to none.

Why I'm Already Obsessed with CrossFit and You Should Be Too

Why I'm Already Obsessed with CrossFit and You Should Be Too

Two weeks ago I started CrossFit with Fer and some friends.  I've been hearing about CrossFit forever and I'm sure you have too.  Generally people who do it are slightly obsessed and like to vocally advocate this type of working out.  Well now I know why and I'm proud to say I am in the CrossFit cult!

Why Being A Soccer Lover is Better in Mexico

Why Being A Soccer Lover is Better in Mexico

I was born a soccer player.  I've been playing since the age of four.  I only ever tried to quit one time when I was in 3rd grade and learned what sprints were, luckily my mom wouldn't let me.  Thanks mom!  Soccer has been pretty awesome for me considering it has been my emotional outlet for good times and bad, a way I've kept fit, and a way I've made long lasting friendships.  I love playing it and watching it.  Whatever way you spin it, it's the best sport in the world.

Why Cancun is So Much More Than Just Spring Break

Spring has sprung and we've already started the month of April.  Here in Cancun, the crazy Spring Break season is coming to a close, which means I can come out of my cave again.  Haha.  It's funny that Spring Break is the thing that brought me here originally, yet nowadays I can't stand it!  Spring break is GREAT for businesses in Cancun and in that respect it's nice, but for locals who work a 9-5 and are sober sallies like myself, it can be a huge nuisance.  Additionally, we like when Cancun is known for being a beautiful, culturally robust city with historical attractions, great food, and amazing beaches, not just a party town for college kids to come get drunk in.  I thought this would be the appropriate time to share why I think the destination of Cancun is so much more than just Spring Break.

Rio Secreto - A Hidden Gem Underground

Rio Secreto - A Hidden Gem Underground

A few weekends ago I was lucky enough to experience a true hidden gem in the middle of the Riviera Maya.  Rio Secreto, literally means secret river, and that's exactly what it was.  It's located in the midst of caves, pools of fresh water, and decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. I headed over to Rio Secreto with the social media gang from Cancun.  We arrived to the check-in area where we watched an informational video and got ready for our adventure.
